www.tips-fb.com The Art of Swag

Today's post is a primer on the art of silverware use and placement. This arrangement is the one used most frequently in fine dining and can be either more complex or less complex depending on the clientele of the fine dining establishment. It is important to understand the placement of your tableware so that you can take your significant other to that swanky restaurant you've been eyeing, or your boss to that upscale bistro so you can get that promotion--without looking like a child eating for the first time.

Salad plates are placed on top of the dinner plate. Napkins are folded and placed in the salad plate. Bread plates are placed to the upper left of the dinner plate with the butter knife placed lengthwise across the plate.

Forks are always placed to the left of the dinner plate. They are always arranged from left to right with the first course on the outside and the last course next to the plate. The order usually follows: Cocktail fork, Salad Fork, Fish Fork, and Dinner Fork. Illustrations are shown at the bottom in order.

Spoons are always placed to the right of the dinner plate. Like forks they are arranged with the first course on the outside and the last course next to the fork. Spoon order is: Soup spoon, Teaspoon, Iced Beverage Spoon.

Knives are always placed in front of the spoons in the same order as spoons and forks. The knife order is : Steak Knife, Fish Knife, Dinner Knife, and Dessert Knife.

Your dessert spoon goes above the dinner plate, and your dessert fork goes above your dessert spoon.

Your water glass, red wine glass, and white wine glass go above your spoons and knives in diagonal descending order.
